Mooc: Yup’ik Language and Culture

Hosted on the edX platform for MOOCs, this course provides an introduction to Yup’ik Language and Culture, spoken by the indigenous people of southwest Alaska. This course was developed with an SME in Yup’ik language, Dr. Angass’aq Sally Samson.

Video: Welcome to Yup’ik Language & Culture

I wrote the script for the introductory video to the course. I also directed the SME in the studio using the Learning Glass, and I had final looks before rendering. The video was captioned using a 3rd party service (3Play Media).

Video: Seasonal Subsistence Activities

I wrote the script for this informative video. I also created the shotlist and directed the final edit to use the best of the footage we captured in field-visits during the development.

Interactive Elements

Interacting with course topics in low-stakes activities helps students engage with the course material in ways that enhance comprehension and pique interest.

Map Slider: Central Yup’ik Dialect Map

This interactive element highlights the five Yup’ik language dialects in the southwestern region of Alaska.

I created the images in Adobe PhotoShop, and used H5P to design the image slider. H5P was integrated into the AlaskaX instance of the edX platform via LTI.

Pronunciation Interactive

This interactive element is created in H5P. It was paired with vocabulary pages for students to practice pronunciation.

This little gem didn’t make it into production, but is a fun concept that I hope to deploy elsewhere.
